The distinction between product management and project management is essential for ensuring optimal productivity. It’s not enough to treat them as interchangeable concepts; it’s crucial to adopt a proactive approach to place the right resources in the right places.
At Thirdbridge, we have always emphasized the importance of having a product manager in application development projects.
This key role in the development process is often confused with that of the project manager, but we will clarify the distinction in the following article.
Project Management vs. Product Management?
Product management focuses on the strategy for creating, developing, launching, and evolving a product. The product manager considers the "what" and the "why," using these elements to guide changes and improvements.
In contrast, project management is a structured effort aimed at achieving specific goals within a defined timeframe. Project managers concentrate on the "how" and the "when," emphasizing logistics and execution rather than creative concepts.
Alignment between these two roles is crucial for the success of a digital product. At Thirdbridge, our product managers combine expertise in both project management and product management, enabling them to provide both strategic and operational support. They go beyond execution by integrating consulting services into development, ensuring a comprehensive and effective approach to digital solutions.
The Impact of the Product Manager in a Software Project:
Product Aspect:
The product manager has a very critical mission: to guide the client in prioritizing necessary developments. To do this, it’s essential to immerse themselves in the client's reality, understand user needs, and collect and analyze data before making recommendations.
Throughout the process, it’s vital to remain attentive to business needs at every decision-making stage. This often involves juggling short-term and long-term priorities to ensure the optimal evolution of the proposed solution.
Management Aspect:
Of course, this task is not easy and requires rigorous project management. Communication plays a crucial role, as product managers are the main point of contact for the client throughout development.
Their mission is to facilitate information exchange, provide visibility on project progress (budget, timelines), gather feedback, and align the interests of various stakeholders to create a clear direction for our development team. They are the glue between our team and the client’s team, successfully bringing together multiple departments and steering them toward a common goal.
Project governance is also part of their mandate. After each phase, it’s important to account for progress, demonstrate achievements, and reconnect these efforts to the company’s strategic objectives. Taking the time to make sense of all this work is essential.
This approach is our method at Thirdbridge and has generated significant impact. Our product managers combine know-how and interpersonal skills to enhance planning maturity and facilitate execution. Our methodology strengthens the role of product managers and integrates into every stage of the design and development process.
